Bits & pieces

Clashes like this have been happening virtually every day for weeks now in Beirut, but al-Jadid (New TV) shot some good footage this time, so it made the world news. See here for an overview of minor and major incidents over the past few days, as well as a report of a meeting where police and army commanders agreed with representatives of Mustaqbal (Hariri’s party/militia), Amal and Hezbollah to ‘lift the immunity of the militants’. Those hooligans actually have immunity?
Amr Moussa will return to Lebanon on the 24th to have another go at Arab League consensus-forming before the next presidential election (not) of the 26th.
Another violent storm (of the natural kind this time) is hitting Lebanon at this very moment.
In an eerie example of the increasing similarity between Israel and Syria, Syrian soldiers have today crossed the Lebanese border (which Syria doesn’t recognize) and shot and wounded a Lebanese man.
It has now come to the point where even Saudi Arabia is advising its citizens – sorry: the king’s subjects – not to travel to Lebanon.
In another sign of malaise, if you do a Google search for the annoyingly ad-flooded website of the Daily Star, you now get the message: ‘this website can harm your computer’.
The Revolutionary Guards of Iran on the other hand are very optimistic. They have written a letter to Nasrallah informing him of the fact that Hezbollah will soon destroy Israel. In the exact words of General Mohammad Ali Jafari: ‘In the near future, we will witness the destruction of Israel, the aggressor, this cancerous microbe Israel, at the able hands of the soldiers of the community of Hizbullah‘. Inshallah of course…
